When the law was passed, it was hoped that by the time the closures became necessary there would be sufficient renewable capacity available to make the loss of the nuclear capacity appear insignificant. Today that policy is still in place but its enactment is no longer a distant prospect. Unfortunately, in spite of a significant increase in renewable capacity in Germany, the imminent loss of this nuclear capacity does not appear insignificant.
