The Eurocopter AS Super Puma is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-size utility helicopter marketed for both civil and military use. First flying in , the Super Puma succeeded the SA Puma as the main production model of the type in ; since Super Pumas in military service have been marketed under the AS Cougar designation. In civilian service a next generation successor to the AS was introduced in , the further-enlarged Eurocopter EC Super Puma. While the new design was of similar layout to the AS , it was powered by two of the new and more powerful Turbomeca Makila turboshaft engines driving a four-bladed composite main rotor, and was designed to withstand damage better, with a more robust fuselage structure, a new crashworthy undercarriage and the ability to withstand battle damage to the rotor blades and other key mechanical systems. A pre-production prototype, the SA , modified from a SA airframe with Makila engines and a new gearbox, flew on 5 September The Super Puma has proved especially well-suited to the North Sea oil industry, where it is used to ferry personnel and equipment to and from oil platforms.

It covers the full spectrum of public service missions SAR, medevac, law enforcement, passenger transport, firefighting, disaster relief, etc. The aerial work version with a shorter airframe and a lighter configuration offers an optimum payload, making it the choice for aerial work and firefighting missions. This version can also be configured for missions such as utility and passenger transport. For law enforcement duties, the H can carry a fully equipped special forces team for deployment by day and night, along with a hoist, rappelling and fast-roping beam.

With a night vision goggle-compatible cockpit, it can also be fitted with a full de-icing kit, multi-purpose air intakes, electro-optical system, hailer loud speaker system, cargo sling and armouring protection. It has dedicated role equipment and an autopilot inherited from the H, including SAR upper modes and precision automatic transition to hover. As a head-of-state aircraft, cabin layouts can include front and rear lounges, galleys and lavatories, along with food service galleys.

Heavy internal loads are facilitated through large sliding doors that allow bulky freight to be loaded and unloaded, while its rear access facilitates the handling of long loads. The one-pilot and four-passenger configuration is ideal for VIP or private and business aviation. With forward-facing seats and a spacious cabin, passengers can make the most of their time in the air. The two-pilot and seat configuration is adapted for commercial passenger transport and offshore operations. In its one- or two- pilot plus seat configuration, the H is suited for passenger transport duties.

Comfortable energy-absorbing seats with a single aisle provide passengers with a sense of volume and ease. In its troop configuration, the H seats one or two pilots and up to 22 troops on utility seats in a mixed back-to-back and face-to-face configuration.

Equipment and personnel gain easier access through two large sliding doors in the cabin. A sample configuration could include a stretcher and up to nine seats for cabin crew, including medical attendants, plus patients.

Large access doors and unobstructed space provide for efficient cabin operations. In its two-pilot, multi-stretcher configuration, the H is ideal for casualty evacuation missions.
