The lyrics of the aria are as follows, with a word-for-word translation in parentheses: Dein ist mein ganzes Herz! Your is my whole heart Wo du nicht bist, kann ich nicht sein. Where you not are , can I not be. Sag mir noch einmal, mein einzig Lieb, Say me more once , my only love oh sag noch einmal mir: oh say more once me Ich hab dich lieb!
I have you love! I feel your close. Wie wunderbar ist dein leuchtendes Haar! How wonderful is your shining hair! As with tradition, its first section is a whole musical unit, ending in the tonic key, and could in fact be a stand-alone section. The second section brings a contrast with the first in various ways, and the third is basically a repeat of the first.
Typically, the reprise of the first section of da capo arias were avenues for singers to improvise variations and ornaments, to prevent it from being a mere repetition, but this has not been the case with the performance history of the aria in question, besides the piano onset of the reprise. Both can be seen as the last bar of the preceding phrase, and the first of the proceeding one.
As indicated in the score, there are 7 series of harmonic expansions , the longest stretching 8 bars.
Interwoven beneath this seemingly straightforward idea of expansion though, are chords on ground bass notes indicated in red on the score with the bass note in parentheses. For example, the 8-bar dominant expansion of b. Parallel open 5 th s are used from b. By doing so, Lehar manages to perhaps, fool the untrained or casual listener into thinking that this is a simple piece with a straightforward tune and chords.
In fact, because of the voicing of the chords, even the function of opening Db o 7 chord may border on that of a tonic, rather than a pre-dominant, depending on the listener. Most of the chords used are straight without the complex harmonic expansions that make the aria what it is. I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it! Thank you for reading! Franz Lehár: Dein Ist Mein Ganzes Herz – arranged by Peter Breiner (PB065)
It was for many years associated with the tenor Richard Tauber , for whom it was written. The aria is sung by the character of Prince Sou-Chong in act 2. An American version of the show opened on Broadway in starring Tauber but it soon closed as Tauber had throat trouble. With Tauber's emigration to London in , it became popular also in the English-speaking world with lyrics by Harry B. Smith , which had originally been written in , and went on to become a staple of light music repertoire for tenor voice. It became a standard and has been covered by artists from other genres, like jazz , swing , big band , and pop music.
