The Prelude Op. Usually lasting between five and seven minutes, this is the longest of the preludes. Some, though not all, of Op. I knew well that you were dead.

As one of the most frequently played of all the Preludes being one of the easiest technically, in spite of its five flats, and having one of the most beautiful melodies , the title has proved a useful marketing tool for music publishers and record companies. Hutcheson, famed pianist and pedagogue, and long-time president and director of the Juilliard School of Music, is remembered for his devilish transcription of The Ride of the Valkyries , enshrined in a classic recording by Olga Samaroff.
Chopin himself very rarely attached any programme to his music. Chopin, together with Sand and her children, Maurice and Solange, had travelled to Majorca in One day, Sand and Maurice leave her sickly lover to collect supplies from Palma. Indeed he had, but now was as though congealed in a kind of quiet desperation, and, weeping, he was playing his wonderful prelude… When I made him listen to the sound of the drops of water indeed falling in rhythm on the roof, he denied having heard it.
He was even angry that I should interpret this in terms of imitative sounds. He protested with all his might — and he was right to — against the childishness of such aural imitations. His genius was filled with the mysterious sounds of nature, but transformed into sublime equivalents in musical thought, and not through slavish imitation of the actual external sounds. Nor does anyone else. Chopin, one feels, would not have been amused. So with all due respect to Professor Hutcheson, as he does not provide any evidence for his assertion, I am sticking with the status quo.
Whatever his reasons for such authorial certainty, Hutcheson is mistaken in his assumption. Even if he is factually right and the B minor Prelude really is the Raindrop , time has decreed otherwise, and amending reference books would not alter that.
