Umayyad dynasty , also spelled Omayyad , the first great Muslim dynasty to rule the empire of the caliphate — ce , sometimes referred to as the Arab kingdom reflecting traditional Muslim disapproval of the secular nature of the Umayyad state. They had initially resisted Islam , not converting until , but subsequently became prominent administrators under Muhammad and his immediate successors. The Umayyads were the first Muslim dynasty, established in in Damascus. The Umayyads also oversaw a rapid expansion of territory, extending as far west as Spain and as far east as India, allowing both Islam and the Arabic language to spread over a vast area.

Umayyad Caliphate

Muhammad united the tribes of Arabia into a single Arab Muslim religious polity in the last years of his life. He established a new unified Arabian Peninsula, which led to the Rashidun and Umayyad Caliphates and the rapid expansion of Muslim power over the next century. With additional support, Abu Bakr was confirmed as the first caliph religious successor to Muhammad that same year. Ali would eventually become the fourth Sunni caliph. Sunni Muslims believe and confirm that Abu Bakr was chosen by the community and that this was the proper procedure. Sunnis further argue that a caliph should ideally be chosen by election or community consensus. Caliph Abu Bakr insisted that they had not just submitted to a leader, but joined the Islamic community of Ummah.


Umayyad dynasty

In the pre-Islamic period, they were a prominent clan of the Meccan tribe of Quraysh , descended from Umayya ibn Abd Shams. Despite staunch opposition to the Islamic prophet Muhammad , the Umayyads embraced Islam before the latter's death in A member of the clan, Uthman , went on to become the third Rashidun caliph in —, while other members held various governorships. One of these governors, Mu'awiya I , after the assassination of Ali ibn Abi talib in and established the Umayyad Caliphate with its capital in Damascus , Syria.
